Stopping Unwise Habits

Written by Ryan Dickinson | Feb 3, 2022 9:12:23 PM

We all are faced with temptation. But our actions in the face of those temptations reveal a lot about what we believe. Are we choosing habits that line up with our true purpose or are we choosing something else?

In our series “Habits”, Pastor Doug takes on the tough topic of stopping bad habits.

Stopping unwise habits starts with a simple question:

Who are you planning to become?

Our habits are taking us somewhere, whether they are good or bad. 5 years or 15 years from now, we are going to be who our habits make us to be.

“The habits we have today will shape who we become tomorrow.” -Doug Dameron

Based on who you want to become, what habits do you need to break?

JAMES 1:21 (GN) So get rid of every filthy habit and all wicked conduct. Submit to God and accept the word that he plants in your hearts, which is able to save you.

Do we find ourselves constantly sacrificing our purpose and dreams for moments of pleasure? It is time to put our efforts into things that get us closer to the person God has purposed us to be.

So, how do you break unwise habits?

HEBREWS 11:24 By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin

FIRST, ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM

“We can’t change what we don’t acknowledge, We can’t defeat what we don’t define.” - Doug Dameron

It’s biblical to acknowledge our flaws and our sins. The Bible constantly tells us to turn away from unwise habits.

THEN, KNOW WHO CAN SAVE YOU

Being faithful to our plans, our promises is difficult because let’s admit it - not one single person on this planet is perfect and every single one of us are sinners. Pastors, club-goers, gamers, children and parents alike. That’s the truth of the matter.

But there is one who is without any flaws…

His name is Jesus and by His name you can be everything He’s called you to be. When we put our faith in Him, He helps us to be who we are designed to be.
